What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
As a young man, I wondered what I should look for in a wife. When I asked an older Christian man who was happily married, he told me to read Proverbs 31. He assured me that the Proverb would teach me everything I needed to know. My adrenaline raced and I could not wait to get home to read it! After reading the Proverb, however, I was disappointed and confused. The words seemed antiquated, the illustrations outdated, and it made little sense to me. Nevertheless, I thought that I needed to understand this Proverb. Therefore, I asked some young ladies that I knew about the Proverb assuming they would be able to shed some light on it for me. When I asked them, they laughed and said things like, “Oh, you mean Superwoman” or “that Proverb is unrealistic, the woman never sleeps.” Their answers left me even more confused and made me wonder whether the Bible would have an example of a virtuous woman that is not realistic.
My doubts and confusion led me down a long road of research and investigation. As I studied the customs of the ancient Middle East and the Hebrew language, I gained a deeper insight into this amazing Proverb. Since King Lemuel wrote these words thousands of years ago, people in modern times often struggle to make sense of them. Yet once his words are understood, the hidden truths are clearly revealed. When I began to comprehend the meaning of his words, I discovered a treasure of wisdom and knowledge. One thing I realized is that the Proverb is not just about a virtuous woman but about life in general. Proverbs 31 has made me reflect on many areas of life and is one of the passages in the Bible that has impacted me the most.
