Young adult
I’ve always enjoyed reading science fiction and dystopian epics. Frank Herbert, George Orwell, and Robert Heinlein were some of my favorite authors growing up. What I’ve tried to do is write a story with believable characters struggling in a world that, while alien, is very familiar in terms of technology and organization. I’ve also tried to combine science fiction with more of a hard action/adventure plot, while throwing in occasional snippets of philosophical query, very similar to what Heinlein does in Starship Troopers.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Be persistent and believe in your work. Find people who you can trust to give you honest assessments of your writing, and use that resource. I’ve refined and improved The Prodigal a great deal thanks to the efforts of numerous Facebook friends who loved the book but had great suggestions about how to improve it.
Author Bio:
My name is Michael Naragon, and I am the author of The Callan Chronicles and the forthcoming MAAS series. My life is nowhere near as interesting as that of the characters I create, but it has its moments. I’ve been working in the field of education for the past twelve years in the metro Atlanta area. I’ve very recently moved to Boise, Idaho to begin a new, exciting chapter in my life, and so far it’s lived up to expectations.
My primary writing interest has been in writing adventure, usually involving some science fiction. In short, I write the movies or animes I’d like to see made at some point, and they derive their inspiration from a lot of different sources. The Prodigal, the first book I have released on Kindle, was born while I was reading some of C.S. Lewis’ non-fiction work. One quote in particular stood out: “Enemy-controlled territory–that is what this world is.” He was applying this in a religious sense, but I wondered if I could make something less abstract from the idea. And the rest is history, as they say.
I’ve always been interested in good action and Japanese film, and those preferences come out in my writing. My next series, which I’m working on simultaneously with the Callan Chronicles, features giant robots, vampires, and an alien invasion, all elements of a potentially great anime. MAAS (01): Destruction will be released in the fall, and will be followed by two sequels.
As far as my personal life is concerned, I have fairly simple loves. I love my three boys, great films, the outdoors, video gaming, good books, and good music. I love to cook and do it whenever I’m able. And I love to write. I hope you enjoy reading my work as much as I loved creating it.
