How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
Writing for children is often considered a good place for the novice writer to start, but in reality, the genre is both difficult and demanding.
DIFFICULT because of limitations such as grade-appropriate vocabulary, sentence structure, concept, or presentation (the need for white space and illustrations). Entire books have been written on each of these subjects.
DEMANDING because of the dual audiences.
The child wants a story that is exciting or compelling or fun, as well as easy to read.
The parent/educator wants the story to have some intrinsic value. Many use the story as a springboard for discussion and teaching about traits such as generosity, friendship, or compassion.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Read—widely and deeply. Read in genres you enjoy; re-read books you admire; try to read well-known works that don’t immediately appeal to you.
Study—your craft. Take writing courses, whether in person, online, or from books. Follow good writing blogs. Try to use what you’re learning to analyze the books you’re reading.
Write—every day, no matter the subject. Setting up a schedule for studying and writing will yield encouraging results.
Don’t ever give up! Follow your dream and work to make it come true.
Author Bio:
Adventure, mystery, and wild creatures all play a part in Gloria Repp’s many books for children. She grew up in the Hawaiian Islands and the Pacific Northwest, and it was there she learned a love for wilderness that pervades her stories. Over the years, her experiences gained from raising three children, teaching school, and editing have made useful contributions to her work.
Gloria enjoys reading mystery stories, and as she remembered her summers spent on a beautiful island near Vancouver, BC, she decided that it was the perfect place for an adventure that could change a young teen’s life: THE MYSTERY OF THE INDIAN CARVINGS.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I’ve always enjoy reading mysteries, and I remember with fondness and clarity the summers I spent on a beautiful island near Vancouver, BC. As I thought about the intricate carvings done by Pacific Northwest Indians, I couldn’t resist dreaming up a mystery for a troubled young teen named Julie.
