What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
This book is dedicated to my son, Chase Benjamin. Chase was born with a condition known as Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome and a Tracheoesophageal Fistula. Before he was born, the doctors told us he would need multiple life-threatening surgeries in order to live due to his heart condition. They also told us not to be surprised by his skin color as he would be born with his oxygen saturation at 70 – 80 percent.
Our sweet boy is still alive even though he endured more in his first couple of weeks than most go through in their entire life. These birth defects will be an ongoing battle his entire life. As a parent, it’s hard to watch your child struggle and be unable to help. Our son is a fighter and never gives up. His father and I are so proud to be in the front row of this miracle that is his life.
Chase has always loved lions, and his character and demeanor very much resembles a strong-hearted lion. Our little blue lion has an old soul and will not let life just pass him by. He lives to the fullest, giving us reminders every day of how precious it is to simply be able to eat and breathe.
If you are reading this, take a deep breath, be in the moment, and feel all the things our bodies do for us naturally. THAT is a pure gift!
This book is also dedicated to all the families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and all other units who must make the hospital environment their home. Your babies and loved ones know you are there! Read and talk to them so they hear your sweet, loving voice.
A special thank you to the doctors, nurses, and all the hospital staff who are still there for us and all the other amazing families on this journey of life!
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The Little Blue Lion is a representation of my son as he has always loved lions and resembles his personality. The Lion is blue to show his cardiac condition and does not have the same oxygen levels as other lions leaving him blue.
