What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I've always loved the mystery genre from books, to television, and the movies. The idea for this book started with the main character and a tragedy. I grew up in the Midwest and base my books in that area. The town in my book is loosely based on Galena, Illinois, a town I've visited many times for it's great shopping.

How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
The Food Network is one of my favorite channels and Darnell Dixon reminds me of Jason Smith. Usually, I comb through magazines and the internet to find photos of my characters. I'm a visual person so it helps me determine which characters are strong, weak, young, or old. I glue a picture on an index card and write all pertinent information about that character. This process helps me keep track of all the details on each character.

Victorian-style lampposts lining both sides of Main Street release a soft glow on the balding, forty-year-old man crossing the street a block ahead toward the Delectable Delights cupcakery. Behind the wheel of the black sedan, Thornley Muggs switches the headlight dial to off.

Thornley Muggs, freelance thug who’s spent more time in jail than a free man in his sixty years, studies the photo in his gloved right hand. He nods to his son in the passenger seat. “Found our target. Get ready.”

Dwight Muggs, twenty-two and following in his father’s unsavory footsteps, pulls a 9mm pistol out of the glove box. “In the past month he’s been home every Sunday night. The one night you pick to knock him off, he decides to bake cupcakes at ten-thirty. Let’s get this over with.”

The car inches forward while the passenger’s window eases open.

Four shots disrupt the peaceful Sunday evening. Tires screech as Thornley hits the gas and speeds toward the highway.

Becky Cartwright races out the front entrance of the Valley Hotel, where she works as the night receptionist. She whips her cell phone from her back pocket then dials 9 1 1 as she rushes kitty-corner across the street to the man lying in the handicapped parking spot near the entrance to the cupcakery.

“9-1-1. What’s your emergency?”

She releases a gasp and splays her fingers against her chest when she recognizes her friend. “Darnell’s been shot! I—I—think he’s dead.”
