Peering out the window, her breath danced on the cold glass, creating cracked patterns all over. Like her life, it was broken, derailed with endless detours. Dismayed, Claire released another breath on the transparency. With the back of her palm, she erased the previous patterns. This time she drew her own single, clear path with no detours.
Oh, what beauty lay beyond these four walls, even though winter brought everything to a halt.
The Andes mountains were marvelous, portraying their snow-covered peaks, soaring above the rest of the world. In contrast to the tormenting storm inside herself, there hadn’t been any snowstorms thus far. Fearless, she didn’t fret over it. Oh no, the brutal thrust of her own storm scared her more, threatened her existence.
Argentina became her home away from home. It had cried for her in the generosity of its people, through the compassionate eyes the mothers of this nation laid on her.
Fear was a strange enemy. It lived in you. No one saw it. Sucking the life out of your mind, numbing the body to any action. Ordinary things, like brushing your teeth and opening your eyes, the mundane actions, become a burden. An unbearable cross. The fight for life left the soul, leaving only the body to exist, to merely function like a machine.
Claire pressed her face against the cold window. As she stared up at the peaks of the great Andes, she reminisced over her beloved Montana. Montana had her heart with its outstretched mountains and beauty.
Oh, my beloved Montana, but your beauty wrecked my soul. Unrecognizably! The haven that gave me a home and a love and a life, was also my end. I ran, as fast and as far as I could. Finally, I paused, forced to see the beauty of this place, and here I decided to search for my heart, to rebuild my soul again. If that is even possible.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed, her back as stiff as a new broom’s bristles, still intently staring out the window.
Three years, three ice-cold, long winters, she fed and bedded him. Dogs wagged their tails, drooling under a table awaiting crumbs from their master. Like them, Claire waited on him, cleaned after him, and washed lipstick-covered shirts day in and day out.
What did he expect from her? To stay – with black-blue bruised eyes, swollen purple lips? She could not now remember which was the hardest blow to her head or how long she was left to bleed herself pale on the freezing kitchen floor. Some memories were tucked deep inside her wrecked soul. Every time she attempted to reach for the truth, she would black out, disappearing in an abyss of blackness, nothingness. Where no one could reach for her. Where she remained voiceless. Silent.
Her heart mirrored the cracks on the window. The path she had drawn, purposefully, gone, wiped away. As if it never existed. Claire sighed, the summary of her life. ‘As if it never existed.’ The pain of living as a prisoner in her own life, as if she were never meant to be here. An alien. Who could love someone like that? Someone who did not even exist. When she was with him, at least someone wanted her
