What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Hollywood seems bent on romanticizing life in the Victorian and Regency era, but it was not an easy time to be a woman. Even with a Queen regent, women had no right to vote, mostly couldn't choose who they married, and as a practical matter it wasn't possible to for them own property. But the movement was on: female authors were beginning to publish under their real names; the London National Society for Women's Suffrage and the Manchester National Society for Women's Suffrage were both established in 1867. A young adult historical fantasy about a woman who struggles for agency is timely… and ageless.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
I had a general idea of who my main character was, but the other characters and world in which Ada lives came about as supporting roles. She wants a life she cannot have. Her family thinks she'll grow out of it. Her abductor, Nadine, sees Ada's independent streak as an asset as long as she can contain it. And Dieb (the little street waif) became a way for Ada to redeem herself for all the self-perceived sins she must commit in order to survive.
