What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I have always loved coming-of-age novels, especially those that introduce me to a new world. And so, as I've been writing a series of novels set on a colonized planet, I thought it would be nice to have a shorter story (about 150 pages) that shows a young woman growing up in this almost-but-not-quite-Earth culture. There's conflict between city and country, conflict between the values each holds, and a young woman deciding for herself what her own values are–all against the backdrop of genetically engineered traits passed down since the world was colonized, centuries earlier.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
My characters are a blend of story archetypes (you'll always find a loyal best friend, you'll find a mentor, you'll find a villain, and other archetypes in my stories) and people I know. I've been impressed by strong women in my life, and those women give me ideas for the sorts of goals the characters in my world might have.
