A young family opens a unique bookstore to help independently-published authors tell their story. But as the traditional publishing industry begins to fall, e-books dominate the book market, and the economy slows, the family winds up homeless– a big secret to keep, as business owners. While some authors struggle with addiction and others struggle to tell their story, a young family struggles simply to survive.

I write literary fiction, which means that it mirrors real life as closely as possible, often mimicking or magnifying it in sort of grotesque ways. It requires an eye for seeing the truth, even in a world of deception and lies. It involves taking off other people’s masks and creating my own for them to wear.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
The most important thing is never ever ever ever ever ever ever to let someone tell you that you aren’t a ‘real’ writer. No. If you’re writing, you’re a writer, so don’t stop writing just because someone tells you that you’re not a real writer. Because then they’ll be right. Always write and always be a writer. Don’t let anyone discourage you. People will try. People don’t like to see change. Force them to anyway.
Author Bio:
Mik Everett was born in 1991 in Wichita, KS, to an accountant and an occupational therapist. She spent her childhood reading and writing and rescuing baby birds. Now a mother, author, and freelance editor, she is also a former bookstore owner, model, and logic clinician.
This book is heavily based on my experiences running the first– and only– exclusively indie lit bookstore in the world. I spent six months riding a fine line between so many worlds: Micro-presses and self-published authors, intent on changing the face of publishing; E-book authors who just wanted to make a sale; Patrons who didn’t know the difference and couldn’t care less; People who had no money to spend on books, people who couldn’t make a sale and were quickly sinking into poverty. All of this was set against a backdrop of the homeless and traveling writers we harbored and tried our hardest to help.
