On my blog, I review primarily books, but also sometimes their film counterparts. I have a variety of genres that I enjoy reviewing. I usually focus on characters and major plot points from books and move on to my opinion of them — what works, what doesn’t, and who might enjoy different types of novels that I could recommend. I also post pictures of things (makeshift bookmarks, usually) that I find in books from libraries or garage sales.
Why Did You Start a Book Blog?
I started a book blog to keep track of my thoughts on all the different types of books I enjoyed — things for personal reading and for class. This was almost a personal book diary, that I could share easily with others when I desired. It turned into a review blog, which was the best organized way to keep track of my opinions.
Bio: I’m from small town Iowa, center of absolutely nowhere. I love the small town life, because it keeps me away from most of the hustle, bustle, and traffic of big cities. Reading out on the farm or in my own backyard brings me greater pleasure than anything else. I’m currently going to school for languages and literature — both professional and creative writing. I enjoy working at the North American Review, the oldest literary journal in the USA. After school, I hope to work more in depth with authors in the field of publishing and editing.
What Kinds of Books do You Review?
I review all kinds of books. Although my favorite type is fantasy or science fiction, I cover many things like young adult books, multicultural novels (I especially love Asian pieces), chapbooks, and essays. I enjoy reading most anything I can get my hands on.
What advice would you give new book bloggers?
Don’t be afraid to put your opinion out there — make your blog unique by adding your own flavor to the books that you read. The best method to get started in book blogging is to start reading other book blogs… and then to just jump straight in. Make the plunge; you won’t regret it!
