WHEN IT COMES TO MURDER…NUMB’S THE WORD.
Old habits die hard. Just ask Cynthia Howell. Her unusual and quite illegal method of coping with stress started innocently enough with best friend and fellow dental student, Andy Caulfield. They had become quite adept at justifying their lapses in moral character. Upon graduation, it was agreed that their indiscretions would remain secret. Until now, when Cynthia receives an ominous note, simply reading: You said it would be over.” With these words, Dr. Andrew Caulfield – renowned maxillofacial surgeon, former best friend and author of the note – has unknowingly sealed his fate.
Dr. Cynthia Howell, is a woman living on the edge of sanity. Debt has become her unwelcome companion. She volunteers her time and services at a free clinic and is devoted to her ailing mother, slowly dissolving into the abyss of dementia. Cynthia needs a release and knows only one way to achieve it. Upon the arrival of the mysterious letter, she concludes that, old friends or not, this has now become a matter of survival. And, not Andy Caulfield’s.

I like to think that I write in a conversational tone. My dialogue isn’t stilted or unrealistic, but rather very easy to read. But, what I really wanted, was to create a likeable and sympathetic killer. I want the reader to feel torn between pulling for the police while, at the same time, hoping the killer gets away with murder. I don’t expect my readers to support Cynthia Howell’s method for stress release, but I would like for them to be able to relate to her circumstances and maybe, in some small way, understand her actions.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
I have three words for aspiring writers, or anyone who decides to take a risk by giving their dream a shot: why NOT you? You have nothing to lose by trying. You have everything to lose by letting fear or lack of confidence tell you that you can’t do it. Also, make sure you do your homework regarding the writing and publishing process. Every time I thought I knew something, I’d come across a term I wasn’t familiar with, research it, and then realize just how much I didn’t know. Remember, the internet is your research friend!
Author Bio:
After graduating from Loyola University of Chicago with her degree in Dental Hygiene (and a Minor in Psychology, which she never stops reminding people), Casey Quinn spent the next twenty-seven years working in a clinical private practice setting, while raising her four children. She drew upon her dental experience, as well as growing up the daughter of a Chicago Police Sergeant (oh, and her Minor in Psychology) to craft her characters and storyline for NUMB. Casey currently lives in St. Charles, IL with her husband, Patrick and anywhere from one to three children, as their single lives dictate. It is Casey’s sincere desire to one day be an empty-nester…
Murder has always been subject of fascination for me. I wanted to write a story about a killer who is someone like you and me. She is a respected professional,a mother, a wife and a daughter who feels pulled in every direction. In dealing with mounting stresses of running a business, tending to her aging mother and trying to stay one step ahead of her creditors, she heads down a deadly path. I drew upon my twenty-seven years of experience working in the setting of a private dental practice and also my growing up the daughter of a Chicago Police Sergeant to create the characters and story line for NUMB.
