What inspired you to write your memoir?
I wanted to share my story hoping to inspire others. It proves the power of determination and perseverance in overcoming obstacles in a devastating situation. In addition to my fighting to survive the injuries of the accident that almost ended my life, I had to battle the incompetence of the western medical health care system. Readers of this memoir will be encouraged to forge ahead and trust their own instincts when faced with any challenges in their life, especially physical
About your Book:
Imagine waking up from a coma in a hospital bed and realizing that you’re connected to three life support machines, unable to eat or speak and the entire left side of your body is paralyzed. Imagine seven months stuck in three hospitals and unable to go home. Five months not being able to walk. Four months without a shower. Three months without being able to eat real food.
This memoir gives a historical account of my journey through three hospitals over seven long months after my car was broadsided by a stolen vehicle traveling at over 80 mph. I suffered a traumatic brain injury and my heart stopped three times on the way to the first hospital. The book details my living in constant pain, in fear of never recovering, and how I found the strength needed to survive. The descriptions of my long road to recovery are filled with wonderful and horrendous medical staff; small, glorious victories; major setbacks; and gut-wrenching experiences described in such a way that the reader can’t help but be empathetic. My family figures prominently in the story, which includes many reflections on how their love and support were vital to my recovery.
How did you decide how to publish your book and where is it published through:
After learning about the difficulties of getting an agent and major publisher to publish a book and the horror stories of writes using the vanity publishers, I decided to self publish through Amazon’s Createspace and Kindle. It gave me creative license and I also loved how that gave me the option to design my own cover and use an actual picture of the accident.
How do you see writing a Memoir as different from writing other genres of books?
I think writing a memoir comes more from the heart where other types of writing comes more from the imagination. While detailing the events of my accident and recovery I had to bare my soul. It was a cathartic and emotional experience.
