Hiding in the shadows just got harder.
When tragedy strikes, Juliana and her family must flee their home. Can they persuade a virtual stranger to help them? Juliana isn’t so sure, especially after their chaperone threatens to cane him. Even as Juliana struggles to trust him, she finds herself drawn to this mysterious man. Surely all she wants from him is refuge…
Rupert is a man whose life depends on his ability to remain unnoticed. What, then, is he supposed to do with this family he’s inherited? His life is overrun with an ancient chaperone who would terrify a lesser man, two spirited girls, and the secretive Juliana – someone he comes to think of as his own precious jewel.
With this new responsibility thrust upon him, Rupert will have to make sacrifices – but will God ask him to sacrifice everything?

How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
This is my second regency novel, and it is a genre unto its own. I learned a lot when reviews for my first regency started coming in. There were things that regency readers loved — and many things they didn’t. So I took all of that knowledge and I tried to make this book bigger, better, and more appealing to the masses. Historical writing is always fun because it requires a lot of research – which happens to be something I love. Regency writing is even more different, though, because it’s almost an entire different culture. The way of life is different, people’s expectations of each other are not what we modern thinkers would expect. Finding a way to be authentic to the time period, respectful of the genre, and yet not spending every other sentence explaining why something was said or done a certain way — that’s a challenge.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
I tell all aspiring writers the same thing. Write! If you want to finish something, you have to start it first. If you want to get better, you have to practice. So write! Keep at it, put in your time, work on your craft. Don’t be afraid to take criticism, but don’t crumble every time you do, either. (You might occasionally be right!) When somebody tells you that you’ve done something wrong, ask why. Make them explain it. That’s how you learn. And if you disagree, explain why. Help them understand so that they can better critique the rest of your work. But above all, write, write, write, write, write, write, and then write some more. Oh, and in case you don’t know what to do — WRITE! 😉
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I love mystery, and I believe that most people wear masks. Very few of us are truly authentic when we meet someone for the first time. I wanted to explore the idea of a hero with a deeply buried past who was forced to wear a mask and be someone other than himself in order to save and protect lives. If I were going to do that, though, then I needed a heroine who also had her secrets. She wasn’t a professional secret-keeper, though, and she couldn’t keep hers hidden as easily as he could his. It’s simple, really. What do you do when you have a man who was raised from the cradle to pretend to be someone he wasn’t and a woman who was taught her entire life that honest is a virtue and should be upheld at all costs?
About the Author:
Heather Gray is the author of the Ladies of Larkspur inspirational western romance series, including Mail Order Man, Just Dessert, and Redemption. She also writes the Regency Refuge series with titles His Saving Grace, Jackal, and the soon-to-be-released Queen. But that’s not all! Interested in contemporary Christian romance? Take a look at Ten Million Reasons and Nowhere for Christmas.
Heather loves coffee, God, her family, and laughter – not necessarily in that order! She writes approachable and flawed characters who, through the highs and lows of life, find a way to love God, embrace each day, and laugh out loud right along with her. And, yeah, her books almost always have someone who’s a coffee addict. Some things just can’t be helped.
