About William Eric Parker:
I am a 22 year old author from Lincoln, UK. I am a mixed genre author, my current title is a science fiction comedy. I have been writing since I was very young, and my recent work is my proudest moment so I'm doing what I can to share it with the world.
What inspires you to write?
There's something about, and I'm sorry if this sounds so very poncey, the complexity and nuances of the world at large and of human nature specifically that makes me want to create whole worlds and characters.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
There are so many I can't name them all, but highlights are Tolkien, Philip Pullman, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, just to name a few.
Tell us about your writing process.
It all starts with an idea usually about the main character and what kind of arc I want them to go through. From there the world, the other characters and plot slowly fall into place. I like to have an idea of the beginning and an idea of the end, but the middle is something I find naturally evolves as I go along. I believe GRR Martin described himself as a gardener, that's what I am when it comes to the writing process. I use a basic document that's usually very messy and let the dialogue guide the next scene.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I read their dialogue aloud and think whether what they are saying fits their character. To that end, I don't like exposition and will try and avoid it if it sounds unnatural.
What advice would you give other writers?
Firstly, I would say read. Then I would say write. If you have an idea but have never written anything, give it a go in spite of that. Don't let feelings of inadequacy stop you. Every writer has a bad day, and every writer starts somewhere. So start if you really want to.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I know that making it in the mainstream industry of publishing is almost impossible without an established platform. So I took the long road, self-publishing. I know this will take years of effort and money, but I'm willing to do it because I want to tell my story so badly.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
AI will change everything. Now publishers will publish directly what an audience wants through a few prompts or a basic outline. We as writers have to fight for our future and the publishing industry needs to pick which side its going to be on.
