About Travis D. Bickel:
I tend to be dark and morose, reclusive and twisted. I avoid outside contact whenever possible, preferring instead to stay home with my goats. I started writing as a way to cope after being diagnosed bipolar and Asperger’s in my early thirties and eventually a story came together.
What inspires you to write?
Anything can be inspirational. I have received inspiration from nightmares, conversations, even a carrot once. Ideas strike me in bed, in the car, a funeral, etc. I’ll jot down a note in my cell phone and later it becomes a story, or a segment thereof.
Tell us about your writing process.
I usually let the story write itself. I’ll start typing and see where it goes. I like to get inside the character’s head, and I do my research on the fly.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I try to become my character.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write down whatever comes to mind, no matter how terrible. There will be something there that you can use, or build on. You can improve on it later.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self-published on CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing through Amazon. It is free and has the templates and helpers to make it easier to build a book. It lists automatically and you don’t have to wait for an acceptance letter and rely on others to see the book in print.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe the paper book is in decline. As e-readers have become more affordable, more people are opting for the digital editions and saving shelf space. There will finally be room to display grandma’s stuffed squirrel.
What genres do you write?: Twisted Fiction
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
