About Tracey Lampley:
I earned an English degree from Miami University of Ohio. Since I was a kindergartner, I wanted to be an author and publisher. So at the tender age of five I published my first book by punching three holes in ten sheets of typing paper and binding them together with my hair ribbon. My uncle bought my book for 5 cents. One nickel, imagine that! Now I want to be the Shonda Rhimes of novellas.
What inspires you to write?
Certain situations–an argument or PDAs–inspire me. Most of all, my character sketches inspire me. Now my audience has inspired me to write a sequel to my novella, Kept.
Tell us about your writing process.
For the most part, I was a seat of the pants writer. With my current book, I’ve started outlining it, even though I’ve already completed three chapters. I’ve also created character sketches.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I both listen to and talk to my characters. I would ask: Kate, why did you do a, b, or c. That character would respond with action.
What advice would you give other writers?
Outline. Outline. Outline! Detailed character sketches can keep the plot moving.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’m not a marketing expert. I selected my publisher, eXtasy Books because of this fact. eXtasy Books (yes, that’s really the spelling, including the capital X) provided editing and a book cover.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Publishing is easy. It’s getting noticed that is a problem. Readers wade through a sea of books, and you hope they discover yours. Discovery can be elusive.
