About Tom Patrick McAuliffe:
Author Tom Patrick McAuliffe is a writer living with his Wife and Cat on Florida's Emerald Coast. He is a former PhotoJournalist with the US Navy's Combat Camera Group and a Magazine Editor/Writer with more than 25 years of By-lines.
What inspires you to write?
The stories… there are soooooo many great untold stories that have yet to see the light of day. When I saw the movie 'Hidden Figure' my first reaction was 'how many other important stories don't we know about?'
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Sadly I have been writing so much I have not had time to read as much as I like but… I like out of the norm writers mostly from Hunter S Thompson to Truman Capote, PJ O'Rourke, Ken Burns and Mitch Albom.
Tell us about your writing process.
Pretty traditional and seat of the pants… I prefer to type rather than dictate and I start with a goal for the book ("When the reader is done I want them to feel X") and then a written outline. I also look at what photos and illustrations can and should be used. I prefer true stories.
What advice would you give other writers?
Writer's write! Simple. If you are not writing every day then you are not doing all you can to develop your talent and your stories. One of the greatest tragedies in life to me is when someone dies with the stories still untold.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
At 65 years old I got tired of waiting for the big Publisher call. When you want it done right sometimes you need to do it yourself. I would encourage all Authors to explore the many DIY publishing and printing models available today.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The future is digital like it or not. A recent study shows digital eBooks accounting for more than 50% of the book sale market now. And while I applaud us not cutting down as many trees I do feel like the feel of a printed book can not be matched.
What genres do you write?: Non-Fiction Biographies, Crime
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
