About Tegon Maus:
Do you know what OCD is?? Some do… some pretend they don't. I write quirky stories about people who see the world a little different… and some that are compelled despite their best efforts to the contrary.
What inspires you to write?
In the 80's my wife and I joined a dream interpretation group. We were told to write our dreams down and we all discussed what they could possibly mean… trust me when I say no one dreamed the way I dreamed… I'm a very competitive person… none of that 'naked in front of the class stuff' for me.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
My wife and I have been married for 52 years… when we were first married I worked 2 jobs and she would come and read to me… she read hundreds of books to me… everything you can imagine. I have always been very fond of Sci-Fi and fantasy… Asimov, Clark, all the greats… it was wonderful. Now as a writer I try not to read other people… I don't want a good idea not to be mine… you would think I could tell the difference but I can not.
Tell us about your writing process.
As it turns out I'm a pantster… 100% hands down make it up as I go along. I generally write in my head as I drive for work… that means I talk to myself quite a bit… different versions of the same thought. When I like one it makes it to paper… well computer to be more accurate. Just like any conversation things have a way of moving off topic which can add a little interest… and some times a new twist.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
…mostly I listen. i write down what they have to say but it does me very little good to speak to them. Each has their own personality and point of view… technically I suppose they are some form of me… I would hate to think so because several are not people I would call "my people"… let's just say they don't have all their eggs in one basket and leave it at that
What advice would you give other writers?
…if you write have your computer read it back to you. If you read it your brain will fill in the blanks. Just look away from the screen and listen to what you wrote… you'll be surprised !!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I write in several genre and as a result I have had as many as 4 publishers at the same time… 1 for Sci-Fi 1 for Fantasy, 1 for Contemporary Fiction, 1 for humor… it took me a bit but at last I have all my work under one publisher… a small press that has published all 7 of my books… I've never been happier.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
…it's the wild, wild west right now. Anyone can publish anything… good bad or indifferent. You can sell ANYTHING… there are publishers that offer 20 books for .99c in an effort to get exposure… it makes readers think EVERYTHING should be cheap or that the quality is lacking… nothing can be further from the truth.
