Since she remains a full-time caregiver for an autistic son, you can usually find Tammy working at home, where she spends a lot of time not completing her numerous home improvement projects, because she’s writing or helping other author friends promote their books on twitter.
What inspires you to write?
I’m the mom and full-time caregiver of a severely autistic son with diabetes, so I’m inspired by life events and circumstances. But the music I listen to has a lot to with the scenes I write and the characters I come up with.
Tell us about your writing process.
I do a brief outline of my plot and characters on paper first, including the age and description of my hero and heroine, and then I begin to write on my laptop. As the story moves along, I expand on my outline and develop my story, adding more detail as I move along. Mostly, I work in chronological order, unless I feel like something’s missing when I’m editing.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Usually I come up with my best scenes when I’m falling asleep at night. Music is a big inspiration for me, though, because in my mind, my stories fall into place like when I’m watching a movie!
What advice would you give other writers?
Learn to take constructive criticism and listen to your peers. The RWA has been very helpful for me.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Finding a publisher can be very difficult anyway, so self-publishing was a no-brainer for me. But don’t be in too much of a hurry with your first book-having it edited can be an important step you shouldn’t skip. One of my priorities this next year is revising my first book because I’ve always regretted not having an editor. The cover can be very important too.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I’m not really sure what to think about the future of publishing. One minute I’m thinking about searching for a publisher myself, but then the next minute I’m hearing all kinds of reasons why I should stick with self-publishing. It can almost be better financially for an author to self-publish because of the amount of resources authors have to distribute their books now compared to the past.
