About Tamara Dumas:
Tamara Dumas was born and raised in the heart of a small Baltic State – Estonia. In 2008 she graduated from Tartu Healthcare School with BA (Hons) in Nursing and shortly after, following extensive travel, moved to London in pursuit of a career as a NLP Life Coach.
Tamara is enjoying her life in London and is saying that it is only thanks to this wonderful city she got inspired to get more creative and start writing.
What inspires you to write?
People. In London you can meet so many different people living each in their own fascinating, mesmerising world full of invisible labyrinths of thoughts; I just can’t resist the temptation to write about it.
Tell us about your writing process.
I start with an idea that resonates with me. It should be something controversial, something that would keep me awake at night. I love reframing so if I have managed to find that perfect reframe when something obvious can become something completely different as the story develops I know I got it right.
I then think of main characters who will communicate the message. It all starts with personalities for me. I ask myself what made them think like that, what brought them to where they are now, how did they create their own reality, a little bubble they live in?
Next goes their physical appearance followed by their names.
I plot out the story from the point of view of the main character to start with. When I am finally happy with that I clear the screen and think of all the same events from the point of view of another character taking enough time to completely immerse myself in that process.
It is important for me to refrain from preferring one story line to another and I enjoy putting it exactly the way one or other character would see the situation. I know I have done well if I have managed to show just how much these two points of view differ without being judgmental toward any of the characters.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I like to believe that once created in my mind the characters exist somewhere in different dimension. They live their own lives and my role is merely to observe their interactions and write all about it. I almost always manage to stay impartial too.
What advice would you give other writers?
The most important thing about being creative and writing in particularly is to trust yourself and your abilities. It makes life easier if you accept the idea that the story would either resonate or not with every individual reader for their very own reasons.
You have to ask yourself what and how you would write if there will be no one to judge you.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My first book was published with a traditional publisher. I suppose I was lucky because they were one of the first publishers I have submitted my manuscript to and I got a response within just a few weeks.
I am now searching for a publisher for my second novel and have already been requested for a full manuscript. I would prefer to go with a traditional publisher again because, from my understanding, it is the publisher who can submit your manuscript for various prizes and that is exactly what I would like to have happen for my second novel.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
As much as I am not happy about this idea I think the future of book publishing is digital.
What genres do you write?: Adult contemporary romance, cross genre, mystical realism
