What inspires you to write?
Every day situation and the City of Detroit is a never ending source of inspiration!
Tell us about your writing process.
Writing is an addiction; a beautiful addiction that I love doing morning, noon and night.
Yes, I have a busy schedule, but I make the time.
In the mornings, I wake up before the house and do my edits. During the day I come up with ideas for other stories and then at night, I concentrate on the story in my head that I’m putting on paper. I like to listen to music – usually a certain song – that inspires me to concentrate on the story at hand.
I’m more of a write by the seat of my pants writer and let the story play out through my fingers on the keyboard.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to my characters. I love hearing them in my head conversing, arguing, discussing and finding out their story.
What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t ever give up on what you believe in and never stop learning how to be a better writer, no matter how many stories you’ve written.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
A friend decided to use a company, but was unsure of the process. I submitted my book to the company and in two weeks I was a published author. That was in 2000 and I jumped into the pool of learning how to market and promote my book immediately.
In 2004, I decided to go through the entire DIY publishing myself and learned how to actually publish a book right instead of using a literary service.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I’m excited about what’s to come as technology changes and makes our publishing process better, faster and more streamlined.
