About Sherry Mayes:
I’ve worked as a journalist for nearly twenty years and have also published two self-help books over twelve years ago, the first one which was a best seller is Be Your Own Psychic, which is an interactive book about using intuition practically in every day life.
Stop the World, a YA novel is my first work of fiction.
What inspires you to write?
True life events always inspire me whether it’s from the news, family or people I meet. . Stop the World was inspired by a girl I interviewed nine years ago who had a car accident and ended up in a wheelchair.
Tell us about your writing process.
I do outline initially by doing an synopsis and a draft on word with characters and then it evolves as I go on. I’m a technophobe crawling slowly into new software so I tend to just type it up on a document and stick it in a file for easy reference.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I definitely listen to my characters. When I write they are inside my head and I’m just writing down what they’re saying. Strange I know. Once they stay chatting, I find that it just goes at full speed and I get as much down as I can and then worry about editing later.
What advice would you give other writers?
Pick a story that you love, really love, because you’ll be working on it for a long time and you don’t know what will happen at the end of it. So all you have is the love of your story.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I had an agent who loved Stop the World but she couldn’t sell it, although she tried extremely hard. So I decided after all the revision we did together to self publish. It just goes to show that just because you put in all that hard work in getting an agent that they can’t always sell it. I would say try with them first though because the revision process with them and their focus on your work is invaluable.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe that print publishing, actually holding a book in your hands is becoming more fashionable again and it will pick up. Reading is the new trend right now and people like John Green have encouraged teens to pick up a book which is great.
