About Scott Delaney:
Pharmaceutical executive with a passion for good fiction. My writing puts spiritual warfare on full display. Do you believe in angels? Demons? Our days are full of questions about morality, decency, patriotism, loyalty, deceit, power. The 'Global Calling Series' looks at what our responsibilities are as Christians and people of faith. I love good stories that keep you on the edge of your seat and won't let you go. My goal is to create a strong desire in my readers to keep turning pages.
What inspires you to write?
The questions of greed, morality and power that pervade our world today caused me to want to create a product that had a powerful, positive message. I also wanted to make readers think and question their beliefs so that their faith can be strengthened.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I love good fiction of all sorts, from Stephen King (great character writing) to Robin Cook (always an amazing plot) to authors of old like Frank Peretti (This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness). I read a lot of typical business/MBA type books to strengthen my leadership in pharma as well as some daily devotional books to try to keep my focus on faith.
Tell us about your writing process.
I have a meticulous process, starting with the creation of a very detailed outline. (Names, dates, character outlines, key events, etc…) I find that the story writes itself if the outline is done right. After initial manuscript is complete, I send it out to 8 beta readers and take their comments and edit suggestions very seriously. After this round of editing, I usually go through the manuscript another 7 or 8 times to make sure that we eliminate as many mistakes as possible. Important note: Find beta readers that aren't afraid of providing tough criticism.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I try to put myself in each characters' shoes. I try to find an inner motivation for each character and write about them as if I were motivated in these ways. I don't really interact with characters but thing long and hard about the way that they would typically act or react in each situation.
What advice would you give other writers?
I have learned that the writing of a book is the easy part. The promotion of a book is where the journey becomes difficult. On a positive note, I have learned that I really love creating a great story and getting it into the hands of as many people as possible. The conversations around these books have truly been amazing and in some cases, life changing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
As a new author, I felt that I needed to prove to myself that I could write good fiction, so I chose to self-publish with a couple of independent publishers. Now that I have won a couple of awards and had some significant success in creating a strong audience, I hope to start working with a more traditional publisher in the near future. My advice for new Christian authors is to work with a Christian group like Xulon or for other authors, strongly consider going straight to Amazon KDP.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that traditional book publishing is dying. With the death of brick and mortar stores and libraries, it will be difficult to find the same success as in days past. Amazon has crushed the big boys. The promotional dynamic will need to change to be more tech focused, as opposed to shelf focused.
