About Sarah F. Noel:
Born in London, I spent most of my adult life in New York. I now live in Grenada in the Caribbean. I’m happily married and have two grown daughters.
The Tabitha & Wolf Mystery Series are the kind of books I like to read on a lazy Sunday: historical mysteries with strong, intelligent, independent female characters. I’ve always enjoyed historical novels that highlight and attempt to remedy some of the injustices of the time. Whether it’s inequality for women, poor labor laws, or widespread poverty, my characters have to face head-on the grim realities of their times. But my books are also fun and filled with adorable orphans, exasperating dowagers, and charming, if somewhat roguish, heroes. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.
What inspires you to write?
I write the books I love to read. When I started writing A Proud Woman, I thought about what I loved most in my favourite books and what I most wished books in this genre would include; then I wrote that book.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Jane Austen every time.
Tell us about your writing process.
I'm definitely a seat-of-my-pants writer. I do try to have some kind of a plot outline (kinda). I at least want to understand who my major characters are, where the book will be set, and some sense of what the mystery might be. I've just started using Reedsy which I really like so far.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I definitely listen to them. Sometimes, I feel as if I have very little control over what they do – particularly one of my characters. It sounds so odd when I say it out loud (or write it), but it does sometimes feel as if they're revealing themselves to me.
What advice would you give other writers?
I enjoy writers in my genre, particularly Alyssa Maxwell and Deanna Raybourn. Outside of my genre, I love Martin Walker and Diana Gabaldon
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I wrote the first book during a short career break. I didn't really think about publishing it, just finishing it. Once I got to the end, I had a new job, and I didn't have the time or patience to start querying agents. I thought I'd just self-publish with very low expectations. I was blown away by how popular its been.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I wouldn't even try to predict.
