About Sarah Alserhaid:
My name is Sarah Alserhaid, debunking reality and challenging norms is what I do every day. As a biochemist by trade and a lifelong storyteller by nature, working in innovative scientific research gives me an eclectic way of viewing the world and all of its hidden mysteries and possibilities.
What inspires you to write?
I love how writing is a way to regulate one's irregular thoughts and put hectic chaos into perspective. Even the act of journaling is therapeutic which I see as a diamond in the rough. The stories I write usually have a subtle lesson to be learned but through an unexpected shift in perspective.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
It’s hard to choose a single author when there are so many compelling and creative writers. I enjoyed works of art from Alice Hoffman, Adrienne Young, Alix Arrow, Agatha Christie, Holly Black, and Lisa Scottoline. Recently, I like mystery, thriller and low fantasy books, but will take on any good book.
Tell us about your writing process.
Once upon a time, I was a writer who went with the flow. In the process of writing my book, I came across the method of outlining one's book and it was a huge paradigm shift.
For my book, I used Microsoft Word to write and outline since that is my comfort zone but for the sequel I will switch to Scivenger.
I have also looked into and researched the Save the Cat method and while I don't fully use it in my writing, the premise is something I incorporate.
I also like to practice well-established authors' techniques and skills to improve my writing. I admit there is no one way to write, but seeing what works for others helps me see what might work for me and what definitely does not.
Writing for me is a continuous learn curve.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I most certainly DO talk to my characters! When receiving feedback for my book and questions from my editor and beta readers, I find myself talking on their behalf. Even if the story I am talking about is a short story about two wolves, I still discuss them as though they are real talking wolves that enjoying teasing one another.
What advice would you give other writers?
There are many different methods and techniques to writing or being creative in general. My advice would be to try them out and find what works best for you and your individual way of working.
You may have to try on a thousand pairs of shoes, but once you find the one that fits comfortably, you'll go far.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I'm a scientist with an active imagination. For so long, I thought of publishing the stories I daydream of but was held back by one reason or another.
In 2022, I decided to give it my best effort and accept the results. No more what ifs, no more how could it be different. Contentment is a gift that has no value and I am grateful that I have accepted this challenge.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
When I first started out learning about publishing, I was shocked to learn that the industry has seen a huge shift. From print on demand services to AI generated content and audio, the winds of change are among us. Adaptation is the hallmark of successful individuals and I think book publishing is adapting to these changes.
What genres do you write?: Speculative fiction
