About Sara Spark:
Dreamer. Teacher. Scientist. Analyst.
I am all of these. My Bachelor’s and Master’s degree focus on science and Psychology. Mainly Biology and Chemistry which absolutely fascinate me. However, I am too much of a people person to be locked up in a lab counting agar plates.
I am a happily married mom. I love dogs and cats. Yes, it is possible to love both. I am a huge science nerd, love all things sci-fi, fantasy and paranormal. Several years ago, I taught myself to crochet (thank you YT) and have become an obsessed fan. My mom was a fantastically fast knitter, but I am not the most coordinated person in the world and never got the hang of two needles. I have been known to stroke colorful yarn skeins and murmur 'my precious.'
I have always been a dreamer. Always loved reading. Always loved romance novels. So paranormal/sci-fi/fantasy romance is my passion! Through the years I have written this and that, stopped and started stories but life kept getting in the way. I never took it farther. But NO MORE! This dream is waiting no longer. I am working to make it a reality. And just between you, me and the fence post….it's a lot of work. But I have a big smile on my face as I work. That counts for something, right?
What inspires you to write?
I am inspired by ordinary life. I am fascinated with the boundary of when ordinary meets extraordinary. I will be in the grocery store scanning my groceries and think what if a woman was scanning a can of soup and an alien beamed down looked around and grabbed her out of the crowd to beam up to his ship. Told you I was a dreamer and a science nerd. And, yes, I always think in terms of a romance. So I am literally inspired by everyday events becoming that pivotal turning point for a person in his/her life. Mundane becomes magnificent.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Becca Brayden (new author I love)
Eve Langlais
Evangeline Anderson
Grace Goodwin
Charlene Hartnady
Celia Kyle
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a TOTAL seat of the pants writer. I never know what my characters will do next! The main idea, characters and major conflict have all been conceptualized in my head before I sit down to write. But the details spring up as my characters interact with each other and my fingers are flying on the keyboard.
Let me caveat this by saying that I am big on editing. If there is one major fault of mine as a writer, it is that I tend to re-read and re-edit as I am going through the creative writing process; rather than waiting till I am finished and editing the entire novel at once. Honestly, I would probably keep editing for months if I could. Can you see my perfectionism leaking out?
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
That's like asking if Texas has chili! Yes! Sometimes, I have a hard time getting them to stop talking. As in, this book was supposed to be finished like 15 pages ago. But, but, but, just one more chapter… she needs to tell him this, she's gotta 'fess up about that, etc, etc.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write the book that you want to write, then go and find your audience. If you compromise because of what is current or in fashion, then you won't like the resulting work, and probably there won't be many readers out there that will like it either.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to self-publish with Amazon, build my reader base and then branch out from there. This is a slow burn career. There is a lot of grinding of the gears and feeding of the machine before you make any progress.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that traditional publishing houses will be phased out. I prefer the more direct route of self-publishing. However, I am concerned that only one company seems to be the major market for self-publishers and has a fairly "black box" method of determining who succeeds and who is banned from their platform. Yikes! Pretty much they are the monster in the space. Not naming names here….
What genres do you write?: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy Romance
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
