What inspires you to write?
Here are a few possible reasons that I am:
a. curious about the perceptions, beliefs, and motives of human beings
b. met creative people at a young age
c. like to entertain strangers
d. words feel easier to write than to speak
Tell us about your writing process.
Sometimes I will write freehand, pen and paper. Sometimes outlining is needed for more story clarity. Characters usually appear first, story second, and writer’s block third.
“Write drunk, edit sober.”
-Ernest Hemingway
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I usually talk to my two dogs about my characters.
What advice would you give other writers?
love things, lose things
be open to feedback
don’t judge your writing or yourself
feel more than think
your first draft needs more work
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I was living in Boston, working a soul-sucking job. I had completed 3 chapters of Mexican Hit Girl. I took a driving vacation to visit my family in Florida, and on the drive back I said, “I’m going to send the first three chapters to agents. If one of the agents respond I’ll quit this lousy, soul-sucking job.” I sent the three chapters to five random agents in New York and Boston.
One agent out of the five called me, and said, “I would like to read the full manuscript. If the rest of the book is as good as the first three chapters, I can sell it.”
I didn’t have a full manuscript. I had three chapters. I told the agent that I needed a month to do more revisions. The next day I quit my job. I eventually finished the book, but the agent was not able to find a publisher. I decided to self-publish in 2013. The book was recently picked up by Creativia Publishing for a second edition.
