About Rusty Nock:
Rusty Nock is my pen name that I use to protect the innocent!! I am a 72 year old British author and my real name is Chris R. Pownall. I began writing in 2008 following my retirement from full-time employment, when I was serving as an Industry Marketing Director.
I have had a very fulfilling life, working in most industry sectors with lots of global travel. My main genre is autobiographical, social & industrial history, and true life.
Rusty Nock’s books are very different, offering my readers some erotic fantasy fiction, which are not for the faint hearted.
What inspires you to write?
I love writing erotic fiction as it stretches my imagination to the limit. I enjoy creating characters and developing their personalities throughout the narrative line. True to say that this kind of writing is a way of expressing my fantasies, which may provide some stimulation to my readers, particularly those seeking some form of boost and enlightenment within their routine sex lives.
Tell us about your writing process.
I begin by inventing a fictional character, which can be of either gender, and then place them in a particular time period in which my story is set. I then work in a separate document to establish a story line, comprising brief bullet point headings of characters names, place names, dates, events etc. I print this off before each subsequent writing session, as a guide to the plot so far, and a reminder of the thread so that I maintain the consistency and accuracy of names in chronological order, throughout the narrative.
At some stage into the story, usually, about two thirds the way through, I start planning the ending, which I find most difficult, as I have to decide who will be killed off, and who will definitely stay in case they are required for a later tale.
Once I have the end resolved clearly in my mind, I then begin filling the gap, which again, requires a great deal of creativity and tenacity .
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I attempt to get inside the minds of my characters and ponder the way they might react to certain circumstances that arise during the plot.
I have to get a feel for each characters personality, then it becomes easier inventing the interactions between all those involved in the storyline.
What advice would you give other writers?
My advice is, do your own thing, that’s how I’ve done it. Yes, I’ve made many mistakes but life itself is a steep learning curve and the guy who never made a mistake, never made anything.
If you try to model yourself on other authors, you will not develop or create something unique which was my ambition when I turned my attention to writing fiction.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
My first books were all published in the UK by what I term a subsidy publisher, which meant that I funded 15% of the initial publishing and market costs, which I re-cooped through royalty payments.
I publish Rusty’s books in the USA by the Independent Publishing Platform – ‘CreateSpace’. This a free publishing service providing you have the necessary skills to use all the online tools they provide. If however you require some form of assistance say with editing or cover design, then there are costs involved. I find that CreateSpace works well for me with my books available both as paperbacks and eBooks throughout the global Amazon network, plus other routes to market.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe that Indie publishing is the future, unless to are either a celebrity or an established author with a proven sales record, then the mainstream publishing houses will not show interest in your work.
What genres do you write?: Erotic Fiction, Group Sex, Bisexual
What formats are your books in?: eBook, Print, Both eBook and Print
