About Roy Humphreys:
Roy Humphreys is retired (from paid work) and lives with wife Denise and daughter Rachael in the southern suburbs of Sydney, NSW, Australia. His primary focus is now his family (four children, 8 grandchildren). He also finds time for running (cross country in the Royal National Park area), fishing and, sometimes, writing.
Patrick’s Journey is based on the real life story of his great grandfather, 6 generations back, that he heard about at a family reunion many years ago. It was a story that he felt needed telling, but never had the time until retirement came in 2012.
What inspires you to write?
In the case of Patrick’s Journey it was simply that the story was too good not to be told. I’d first heard about it at a family reunion many years ago and then found there was considerable material already published about Patrick. There was no need for another purely historical view. In any case, I wanted to portray him as a young man going through incredible life changing events and historical fiction was the best vehicle for that.
Tell us about your writing process.
I had an overall broad outline of the factual story and built on it from there, pretty much without any formal map.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Not so much listen or talk – it’s more imagining what they are going through then putting their words to that
What advice would you give other writers?
You must have a passion about the story you want to tell.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
For me self publishing was about the only option. As an unknown writer I’d probably be still waiting to publish if I followed the traditional route of submitting to publishers and then waiting for a response at their discretion.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Its obvious that the indie authors now have the tools to change the playing field. Traditional publishers just need to adapt to accommodate them.
