About Rose Titus:
Rose Titus resides somewhere in cold, dreary New England with two manipulative cats and a very out of date computer with which she creates horror and fantasy fiction. She also has a restored classic Buick to ride around in while in search of adventure.
For travel she has stayed the night in an allegedly haunted castle, has taken a boat ride on Loch Ness, and has visited the Bermuda Triangle — without getting lost.
Her work has previously appeared in Lost Worlds, Lynx Eye, Bog Gob, Mausoleum, Weird Terrain, Descend, The Dead River Review, and other literary magazines. She also writes regularly for Blood Moon Rising Magazine.
What inspires you to write?
Every day events, things in the news today, and just life in general inspire me to write dark fiction and horror…I mean, look at what's going on these days: The world is on fire (literally), there are wars going on, robots are taking over society, we have killer viruses, books are being banned, and finally the government is talking seriously about UFO's and aliens. I've come to feel like we're all living in a bad science fiction movie right now. Every day, I see a news item or true life event that inspires me to write horror.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
I have too many favorite authors to count, but I love Stephen King, Brad Steiger, Michael Harner, Kathy Tyers, Fred Saberhagen, Michael Reaves, Barbara Ehrenreich…there are just so many authors that I love. I just can't name them all.
Tell us about your writing process.
I just turn on my very old computer and open a document and start typing. Somehow, the story seems to write itself. It just sort of all comes out. It's like I go into a trancelike state while writing and it's like the story is happening around me. I feel like I'm in an alternate reality of some kind, in a sort of dream state when I write. Then when it's finished I sort of wake up and proofread and it's like, OMG, did I write this?
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
My characters sort of come alive to me while I'm writing – they seem to have their own motives and their own character background. I feel like I'm only typing what they say to type. It's like I'm channeling them somehow.
What advice would you give other writers?
Proofread, proofread, proofread, make sure it's perfect before sending it off. That's very important.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I'm old fashioned so I publish the traditional way – I send to publishers and wait. At first it was hard, but I've developed some great relationships with editors and publishers and fellow authors over the years.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I'm really not sure what the future holds – right now it looks like the future is in ebooks. But as I've said, I'm old fashioned and I love paperback and hardcover books.
