About Robin Mellom:
Robin Mellom is the bestselling author of THE CLASSROOM, a middle grade series from Disney-Hyperion. She is also the author of the forthcoming three-book picture book series, HANNAH SPARKLES, from HarperCollins as well as THE PAGES BETWEEN US, a middle grade series told in letters, co-written with Lindsey Leavitt, which releases from HarperCollins in early 2016. She has taught grades five through eight and has a master’s degree in education.
What inspires you to write?
I have loved writing ever since I was a little girl. When I became a middle school teacher, I knew I wanted to write for them. Branching out to young adult has been a blast!
Tell us about your writing process.
I am definitely an outliner. I map out the turning points, but as I write I sometimes revisit the outline and make changes.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to my characters when I go for hikes. I keep a notebook in my car and jot down all my new ideas as soon as possible!
What advice would you give other writers?
Write a book and then write another book. Then repeat. I didn’t get my first book contract until I had written five full novels.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I found a home for my middle grade and picture books with traditional publishers. But my teen romantic comedies seemed a perfect match for self-publishing. It’s a blast!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It will keep growing and more people are going to fall in love with reading.
