About Richard E. LaMotte:
Richard E. LaMotte is a seasoned writer and the influential author of his upcoming fiction novel to release titled “The Song of Ramon and Maria,” which will be available on Amazon and Kindle soon. His books will be in digital literary magazines and book sites, with several new books to release.
Richard has always been an observer of people and loves stories; he enjoys stories about history, people, mysterious and exotic places, love, danger, and adventure. Stories about behavior, motivation, self-realization, and self-deception – in other words, stories about us – us as humans.
This passion resulted from Richard joining the Marine Corps just out of high school and born from working in the motion picture industry as a costume designer, art director, technical advisor, and director – traveling worldwide, setting up departments in foreign countries, and working with prominent Hollywood actors and actresses.
A unique storyteller, he has worked in off-beaten places on six continents. History lover. Reader and researcher. Collector. Artist. Designer. Music lover. Husband. Father. Full of life’s experiences, Richard E. LaMotte brings his unique talents, keen eye, and sense of humor to his writing – both fiction and non-fiction.
Now retired from the film and motion picture industry, Richard is devoting his time to his love of stories – writing adventures for avid readers. Rich and his beautiful wife Patricia reside in Valencia, California.
What inspires you to write?
I’ve been fortunate enough to travel extensively over the years. I have seen and explored exciting and interesting places and met interesting people, so I have inadvertently collected a lot of story material.
I enjoy watching people interact and enjoy storytelling.
Now that I am retired, I have time in my life to explore memories and reframe them into written works, which I hope readers will enjoy.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
This is an easy question. Elmore Lenord, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Oscar Wild, Joseph Conrad.
Tell us about your writing process.
Since I studied screen writing at UCLA and USC and have taken extension classes, I have read dozens of screenplays, so the three-act format comes naturally to my thinking.
I start with a theme, something the story is about; then pick a setting that interests me or that I have some first-hand knowledge about. I like human drama, so characters are selected that have the best chance to explore the theme.
I sometimes outline story events on 3×5 cards and keep a couple of pages of background notes next to the computer. I start knowing that it’s all about rewriting.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
It sounds funny, but the characters do have their own voices. So I try to visualize every scene and understand what the characters are thinking. Sometimes what they want to say surprises me.
What advice would you give other writers?
If you really enjoy writing, then never give up.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
When working in the movie industry, I used to write spec scripts. I optioned a couple of scripts but never sold any. Since I’ve retired, I decided to turn some into novels and self-publish them myself.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I spoke to a salesperson at a bookstore who told me that 'Covid' had inspired many younger people to read or listen to books.
I hope the trend continues. Reading is the cheapest form of entertainment with the side benefit of enlightenment and learning.
What genres do you write?: Fiction
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
