About Reuben Shupp:
Reuben Shupp is the author of Short Stories or Tales, Creepy and Scary Tales, and his latest, Vampire Juice. He discovered his love of prose when he started writing a memoir for his children. Shupp is passionate about writing horror for middle grade and young adults.
What inspires you to write?
The inspiration for my latest book, Vampire Juice, was two things. First, after reading Monster blood, I thought to myself… What about vampire blood? Then I thought are there any movies similar to this idea? Yep, The Lost Boys.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
R.L. Stine, Robin Hobbe, Piers Anthony, and Terry Brooks are my favorite authors of all time. I am currently reading Carrie by Stephen King.
Tell us about your writing process.
Come up with a title and draw out the entire book with bubbles like in a comic book. Write out the book by hand and make changes. Type the hand written book in google docs and make changes. Finally, edit, edit, and edit some more.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
From the moment I create the title for the book up to the point I type the end. The characters talk to me all the time. Even when I am sleeping. In Vampire Juice, Amanda told me about the plot twist, a kidnapping.
What advice would you give other writers?
Read what you write. I write middle grade and young adult horror; thus, I read many of R.L. Stine books.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I listened to the advice of Anne Rice. If traditional publishers do not want your books, then self-publish it. And that is the story of how I published Vampire Juice.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think in about 20 years there will not be traditional publishers.
What genres do you write?: horror, paranormal, and urban fantasy
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
