What inspires you to write?
Stories come to me. Scenes play out in my head, and it seems a shame not to share them.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m definitely a pantser. I have the basic story line and the main characters in my head; then I go with the flow. The characters develop as I write. They meet new people, have new adventures, make new mistakes, find new loves. Sometimes I’m quite surprised at how things turn out.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I “see” the characters interacting with other characters. I write what I see them doing. Sometimes they’re so playful they keep me awake at night.
What advice would you give other writers?
I didn’t think I would ever be published. I started my novel because writing it was therapeutic. A friend urged me to try for publication, and I’m so glad I did. It’s been such a fun journey.
Advice: If you think you can’t write, write anyway. If you think you can’t get published, query anyway. If you don’t know something, ask. The community of writers is the most caring and giving group of people you would ever want to meet.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I decided to go with a publisher because I was new to publishing and didn’t know any cover artists and formatters. I’ve been mostly happy with my decision; however, now that I know more about publishing, I might self-publish my next book to have more control over cover art and edits.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think more people will be self-publishing simply because they can have more control over their work and they don’t have to share their royalties with a publishing company.
