About Pete McGinty:
Pete McGinty has seen life through the eyes of a roofer, bartender, bouncer, railroad track laborer, and auto racing photographer. As a writer, speaker, and brand consultant, he has had a vast career in marketing and advertising, observing and influencing how people think and behave. He is now putting his experiences of observation and curiosity to work through storytelling, creating characters beholden to deep flaws and abounding promises, and weaving tales rich with emotion.
Never straying from Ohio, Pete remains a Midwestern kid at heart. A graduate of The Ohio State University and a lifelong suffering Cleveland sports fan, fueled by caffeine and classic rock, he finds escape in love of family, travel, reading, furry creatures, and his home gym.
What inspires you to write?
I'm inspired by the creative expression and the desire to share my stories with others.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
My absolute favorite author is John Irving, hands down. I also like Cormac McCarthy, Pat Conroy, and Stephen Pressfield. For historical fiction, I love Erik Larson.
Tell us about your writing process.
I find that I am most creative in the morning from 6:00 am to 10:00 am. but I write throughout the day. When I'm struggling, I leave my desk and do other work or activity. I'm not someone who is good at writing to push through. If I don't feel I'm putting something good down, I'd prefer to walk away.
I always work from an outline, using the three-story structure. Chapters and scenes can evolve, change, shift over time and I might not always end up where I thought I would.
I use Scrivener and I do create character sketches with as much detail as possible. Usually these are filled in as the book evolves.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Both! I get to know my characters so well I feel like I've known them all my life. I get to know how they would respond to any situation, how they would talk, if they have an accent, what makes them upset, happy, said, and how they would react to situations.
What advice would you give other writers?
Well, I'm rather new at this. But the advice I would give is the advice I've learned from other authors. That is to write, write, write, and fight through resistance.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I spent months researching which direction to go. Each option has their own merits. I found the process very confusing until I landed on my partner, My Word Publishing. I would use them over and over, in fact, I plan on it.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Changing all the time. I think it is a double-edged sword for authors, in that it makes publishing affordable and accessible, but as a result, the universe is flooded with books which makes it harder to break through the clutter.
What genres do you write?: Historical Fiction
What formats are your books in?: Both eBook and Print
