About Nicholas Fisher:
I am a college professor of English, and I like edgy books with a high drama content. I have published horror novels and collections under a different name and my first Young Adult novel is titled “Becky’s Kiss,” coming out November 30th through Vinspire Press. This is a paranormal love story with a baseball theme.
What inspires you to write?
I write about people because they are so funny, sad, inspiring, and thought provoking. Daily drama fascinates me, and I love putting that kind of thing into a book.
Tell us about your writing process.
I do not outline when I write, because it takes the surprise out of it for me. Some would say this is like jumping off a cliff hoping for a hang glider, but give me the cliff every time! I usually have a general idea of where I am going, maybe an image to strive for, but I leave things open. That way writing each day is exciting exploration, not work.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I don’t necessarily listen to my characters, nor talk to them, but they begin having a life of their own on page thirty or so. This is why I don’t outline. My characters tend to grow and start writing themselves.
What advice would you give other writers?
My advice for new writers would be not to follow trends, especially those set by small magazines. These trends tend to change, sometimes overnight, and it is a fool’s game to chase them. Stay true to your vision and write it. Let the trends come to you.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
While self publishing is so big now, I decided to publish traditionally. If I can get a publisher behind me it proves I am going in the right direction, while self-publishing might lead to a lack of discipline.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think publishing is moving toward more self-promotion, and themes that can be used in film or television.
