What inspires you to write?
I guess it was that I have tons of stories. Mostly I've been regaling my girlfriends with them for years when they think their lives are tedious. They can feel comfy in thinking, “well, at at least MY life isn't Vardzie's disastrous existence."
Tell us about your writing process.
I simply write things I can remember on scraps of paper for about three months. When I had enough to make a book I kind of organized the paper scraps and away I went! It's lonely work and I wrote for about 16 to 18 hours a day. I knew if I put it down for a moment…just a little moment…l'd put the darn thing away and never get it out again. It took me a little more than three months to write the thing.
What advice would you give other writers?
Well, what's good for me may not be great for you. So do it your way, no matter how crazy it seems to you. If you can do it all at once…bless you. If not…then so be it. Whatever keeps you from putting it away and never touching it again, then that's the way to go!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
When I finished the book I sent it to the only living author that I knew. I knew that he'd be honest with me and tell me if it was a piece of poop. Well he did that…Burt Kearns is his name… and finally when he realized I'd sent a few agents letters…he said to me…”Oh goodness, girl. you've not got the patience for all that. Are you crazy?? Just bite the bullet and publish it yourself! Then the publishers will see it and want you to do another one for them." I didn’t tell him I wouldn't do another one for anyone!
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Well, I may be an author, but it hasn't been very long that I have been. So I don't know if I'm the person to be asking. I think you'd be much better off asking authors who have written more than one book, who may have done both traditional and self publishing! Also, I'm donating all the proceeds, not just the net, to two cancer research foundations.
