When I decided to turn my writing hobby into something more serious, it came as a bit of a surprise to me that I seemed to be a natural romance writer because my favourite TV shows usually involve zombies and spaceships (although not necessarily together). But after writing six contemporary and paranormal romances (under the pen name Nerika Parke), I decided it was time for something different. So now I am writing about zombies and spaceships (not together, yet) and anything else that comes into my mind. All with action, likeable characters, humour and excitement.
Being UK born and bred, all my books come with British spelling and terms thrown in for free.
What inspires you to write?
I get an idea, I write! Sometimes the ideas come from articles I’ve read, or (very occasionally) dreams, but mostly from the deep dark recesses of my mind (even I don’t know what goes on down there). And once they’re in my mind, they will not let go until I write them. I always have several book ideas and bits of books waiting to be written and completed. I have a lot of stories to tell, and wish there were more hours in the day to tell them!
Tell us about your writing process.
How I write depends on what genre I’m writing. If it’s romance, I write scenes as I think of them, which won’t be in chronological order, then join them together like a jigsaw puzzle. With more plot driven genres I write more from start to finish, with some exceptions, although I will often have scenes in my mind ready for later in the book. When I have ideas I write them down, but don’t outline as such. Most of the process goes on in my head!
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I eavesdrop on my characters talking to each other a lot! But they don’t talk to me.
What advice would you give other writers?
Persevere, listen to other writers, learn what you’re doing wrong and fix it, always know you can and will get better, keep writing.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I’m a bit of a control freak, so I self-publish. I like to do things for myself, so turning my book over to someone else would be pretty much impossible if I wanted to stay sane! I also like to finish something, publish, then go onto something else, so the speed of self-publishing is what I like.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think the number of people reading will continue to grow, so there will always be a market for writers and whether self or traditionally published, it will continue to be an exciting ride.
