About Nathan L. Yocum:
Nathan L. Yocum is an unmitigated genius hiding out in the emerald foliage of Mt. View, Hawaii. His novels, The Zona, Automatic Woman, and The Strong Brain are all available on amazon.com or through Curiosity Quills Publishing. He is also a prolific short story writer and techno-fetishist.
What inspires you to write?
I need oodles of attention and positive reinforcement.
Tell us about your writing process.
Good writing is like meditation. I like to imagine the protagonist in my mind and have him or her interact with other characters that is logical to the setting (1950’s cyberpunk future, etc.). I put the protagonist on a trajectory of mayhem…they endure escalating problems until reaching some sort of resolve (or not). I also drink a lot while doing this.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
They live in my head…so both?
What advice would you give other writers?
Finish the manuscript before engaging in the editing process. It is so easy to get caught in a black hole of endless edits. Finish the book, put it down, edit after giving yourself some space and breathing room.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self-published my first book on kindle and used its positive reviews to get a publisher to pick it up.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
People will always need stories. The delivery methods will change with technology, but then they always have. We won’t always use paper, it’s silly to think otherwise. We don’t use papyrus anymore…nobody considers scrolls an acceptable method of data storage (except for LARPers I guess).
