About Michelle Vongkaysone:
My name is Michelle Vongkaysone. I am a native of Texas and a distinguished scholar of Amarillo College and West Texas A & M University. I’ve been a life-long advocate and enthusiast of the arts, but especially literature.
I’ve been told, by educators and peers alike, that I have a flair for writing. Whether they be scholarly essays, contemplation on life’s nature or merely little fictional drabbles, people have been enthralled by my works. As such, I have had various pieces published within academic compilations and the like.
However, I’d like to broaden my horizons with fictional works. Some are short, stand-alone stories, and others are part of a larger whole. They may fall under any genre, covering numerous topics. But, remember: I write because I love this craft. I adore building these worlds, painting my thoughts into prose, just telling the tales of my very own creations.
And now I’d like to share them with you, my attentive audience.
What inspires you to write?
I began writing as a form of self-expression which branched from the paintings and drawings I did in spare time. Along the artistic process, I discovered a cast of recurring characters and themes I kept repeating. When I sat down to think about them deeper, I realized they could support a variety of series focusing on life’s tragedies, triumphs and everything else.
As such, I began to adapt the scenes and tales I’d previously drawn into text, and it just continued from there.
Tell us about your writing process.
Whenever I form a concept I’d like to run with, I create a rough outline of the characters present, their appearances and general personalities. From there, I craft the world they would exist in, alongside what obstacles they would face in achieving their overall goals.
Once I have a general idea of all it entails, I write out a basic outline of my story’s overall plot and its highlights. From there, I begin to write out major plot points, and work from there to connect them together. Along the way, I develop the characters even further and add on additional scenes.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Honestly, I don’t do that, but I try to fit them into real-life situations I’ve personally experienced. At times, it helps to pull back and imagine what they’d do in similar circumstances. It serves as a good way to craft their personalities, in both a large and small scope. It helps give them more nuance, and to create lively, understandable characters.
What advice would you give other writers?
Become well-learned, as well as well read. Make a point to learn one new thing every day, whether it be from scholarly media or mere claptrap. A vast well of knowledge is essential to portraying one’s characters, situations and reality as they are in truth.
Open your boundaries to any experience, whether it be the mundane, grueling, extraordinary and everything in between. One never knows where inspiration may strike, so be available to what comes one’s way.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I read about Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing service for digital books, and was intrigued by their system. As such, I wrote a few short stories for publication and created my digital files through their service. Once all the preparation had been done, it was fairly easy to send them out.
As for publishing advice, I would suggest researching traditional and digital publishers in order to find one that suits one’s particular needs the best. I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m currently satisfied with Amazon’s online service as is.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I believe there will be a market for traditional paper printing and digital publication. While digital publishing may become the more dominant force, I feel paper print will remain as long as a market exists for it. However niche it may be, I think it a valuable service to like minded bibliophiles.
