About Michele Shriver:
Michele Shriver is a National and International best-selling author of women’s fiction and contemporary romance. Her books feature flawed-but-likeable characters in real-life settings. She’s not afraid to break the rules, but never stops believing in happily ever after. Michele counts among her favorite things a good glass of wine, a hockey game, and a sweet and sexy book boyfriend, not necessarily in that order.
What inspires you to write?
The short answer is anything and everything. I can find inspiration from many things. I draw on my interests, my life experiences, and the voices in my head.
Tell us about your writing process.
Definitely pantster. I don’t outline because I know I won’t follow it. I just need to have to the basic idea for my characters (goals, motivations, etc) and plot and I start writing and see where they take me. They often surprise me, but they know best.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Both, but usually more listening.
What advice would you give other writers?
Keep writing, always. Keep learning and trying to learn the craft. One should always be learning to improve, and you can learn by reading the work of writers you admire.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I made a decision to self-pub my first book back in 2011 when self-publishing was all the craze. Since then, I have subbed books to agents but ultimately stayed with self-publishing. It suites me because I like having control of my covers and all aspects of the process. My best advice is evaluate what your personal goals are and how involved you want to be and make a decision from there.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
It appears small press publishers might continue to struggle as the self-pub wave takes over. I think there is still room for the big publishers and big names, but ultimately readers just want good books. If they get them for $2.99, why pay $9.99? It’s about quality, though.
