About Melissa A. Smith:
Married, I’m a stay at home mom with two teenaged boys and a wild imagination! I love to laugh and spend time with my family when I’m not lost in whatever new world I’ve created.
What inspires you to write?
I love creating new worlds filled with new people and new adventures, and I love sharing them. I also love that people want to join me there.
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a little bit of both, a pantser and a plotter. I write out a very loose outline that gives me direction without boxing me in. I also write out all character profiles, they help me to visualize them better as I get to know them.
I use post its. A lot of post its. (I should buy stock) And mini memo books. I also love Scrivener and Aeon Timeline. Without those two items to keep my notes in order after I have scribbled them out? I would lose a lot of my ideas and work. (along with my mind!)
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes, they kind of force me to listen to them! They can be rather loud and obnoxious if ignored for too long. 😀
I try not to talk to my characters unless I’m alone, otherwise my family looks at me as if I’ve suddenly grown a horn.
What advice would you give other writers?
Write!
Cliché, I know, but it can’t be said enough.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
After receiving a rejection letter that said they loved my idea and book, but didn’t think it would sell, I decided to let the reader decide. I have no regrets.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Not sure.
I would, however, like to think it will only grow and get better. For all of us.
