About Mel Teshco:
As a rather quiet, introverted child, Mel Teshco would never have believed it possible she’d one day be making a living writing hot, erotic stories and meeting so many other wonderful writers. She can most often be found at her computer, giving into her children and/or cats demands and occasionally/often drinking home brew, which brings out her sociable (i.e. loud) side. Her long-suffering husband is still waiting for retirement.
What inspires you to write?
So many things! But to be honest it’s usually a scene in my head, which I start off with and then layer in and add more scenes to, fleshing it out until it’s a book. A story I’m working on now actually started from a really vivid dream I had, and wrote down before it slowly vanished from my head.
I’m also lucky enough to be living with mountains surrounding me (Europeans would probably call them hills) – there’s something about nature that inspires you to write.
Tell us about your writing process.
I don’t plot, but I do start with a scene, and as that one finishes I have a fair idea of the next scene, which I visualize in my head as I go. Sometimes I have an inkling of the ending, but more often I don’t – which is probably why I hate doing them lol! I always have to flesh things out more, adding depth and layers to my story as I go. I often reread my last chapter and do the ‘fill in’ as I go, or I just can’t seem to move forward if it feels underdone.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I can’t say I’ve ever spoken to my characters, but they most definitely come to life in my head. I like them to have faults and insecurities, otherwise they’re too bland and cardboard cutout.
What advice would you give other writers?
Try and write a little each day – but have that rest when you need it. Sometimes the daily grind is taxing on your creativity and you can do more in the long run by having some time out and refreshing your mind.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I was first published in 2009 with Ellora’s Cave and Harlequin Nocturne Bites – back then self publishing wasn’t really an option. I love that we have so many platforms now to choose. I will probably always be a hybrid author – my eggs in many baskets.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think print will always be around and that ebooks will continue to grow and evolve. I’d love to see Amazon have some more competition.
