About Marin:
A long time ago Marin was a child. He was one year old when his father passed away. His mother remarried and Marin was raised by his loving (but strict!) grandparents. He learned to read and write long before he went to school. Books became his imaginary parents and his fictional friends.
Marin studied nuclear physics, art, and literature. He owned an advertising agency for many years.
Oh, a few more things: he does not drive, he does not drink carbonated beverages, he has never consumed food from fast-food restaurants, he does not have a mobile phone, he has never used legal or illegal drugs, and he has never visited his GP (much to the disapproval of his wife). He started his small publishing house FONTREAL (children’s picture books) in 2016. Marin lives with his family on the beach of the Atlantic Ocean – in St. John’s, NL, Canada.
What inspires you to write?
To be honest – the word inspiration does not exist in my vocabulary. I am a happy man who can sit down and start working anytime any day. Why happy? Because I was born as a male human being, not a male praying mantis. And I love to create.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Dostoevsky, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Tell us about your writing process.
I never know what will happen in my children's stories. Sometimes the spark is one sentence, one expression, or one word.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
To me my characters are real.
They tell me what to do.
I just try to be a good listener.
What advice would you give other writers?
Be yourself. Probably the most significant writer of our times works quietly in his basement and nobody knows his/her name.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I never wanted to work with a traditional publisher for various reasons:
1. I am fiercely independent
2. I write, illustrate, design, and publish my creations in order to have a piece of art as a final product (only THE TALE OF WAS AND DAS was illustrated by a friend of mine for good luck in the publishing world).
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Trad publishers will start losing their grip. Self-publishing will become a norm. The bad thing is that this way low-quality publications will flood the market – many authors believe that their grandmother is a good editor and their teenage nephew can design awesome book covers.
What genres do you write?: Children's picture books
What formats are your books in?: eBook, Print, Audiobook
