About Mallah-Divine Mallah:
Mallah-Divine Mallah weaves today’s hot-button social issues with the language of an urbanite reality. He crafts tales so vivid you have to wonder are they autobiographical.
He pushes the envelope to where urban entertainment should be. His novel reflects the Black American experience. The aggressive tone of his work is refreshing and promotes a what if scenario. What if an urban guerilla organization come into existence in the cities of America. It is a thought provoking idea.
He coined the phrase Urban Political Street Thriller.
What inspires you to write?
I started writing in around the 8th grade when I had a creative writing class. I had got away from it with the onslaught of the Hip-Hop explosion. I came of age in what is considered the Golden Era of Hip-Hop and switched to writing rhymes (raps).
Due to an unfortunate situation, I found myself in prison at 20 yrs old. In the course of my incarceration, I morphed into writing poetry. But my hunger for storying telling kept gnawing at me. So a group of prisoners with a teacher help created a creating writing workshop.
Through the workshop, we taught others and my skills got honed in the process. We published two literary magazines called the Capture Quill, which I have a few short-short stories published in it.
I know I wanted to write but with substance. I want my novel to start a conversation about the social and political dynamics in this country.
Tell us about your writing process.
I start with an idea, then think what type of characters would be involved. I developed the characters. I do not do a linear theme structure. I have certain points or situations of drama I want to hit. But as the characters interact other possibilities and themes reveal themselves. I only use MS Word because I can be on the train or bus and pull it from the OneDrive and continue writing on phone.
What advice would you give other writers?
It would be to write and continue to study your craft and read, read, read. By reading you allow concepts of people, places, and things to filter in your head. As well as be observant of your surroundings. How a person talks, walk, and overall mannerism. All this can be used.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self-published using Createspace.com which is a subsidiary of Amazon. Which allowed me to sidestep begging for agents and seeking their approval to validate my work. I took a guerrilla approach to this.
I would encourage you to self-published and if you want an agent or a big publishing house let them come to you.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think it will head in the same direction as the music industry, as long as technology to self-publish keeps developing and low-cost promotional outlets become more available.
