About Maggie Chatterton:
Maggie lives in sunny Florida with her family and their small menagerie of pets. She spends her free time reading, writing, and talking to friends. Her interest in writing was sparked in elementary school by a short story assignment and has only grown since. She hopes to turn this passion of hers into a career. Her first published work was a poetry collection titled This Lullaby.
What inspires you to write?
I’m inspired to write by emotions that I don’t have the ability or opportunity to convey vocally. I’m also inspired by the desire to share the stories that keep popping into my mind.
Tell us about your writing process.
My writing process is rather chaotic. I mentally outline and plan my book, but there isn’t any real paper trail for my stories and poems. I do write out scenes and verses before I need them, so that part is out whenever the inspiration to produce it hits. I use OpenOffice and OneNote for my writing, though I’m still fond of writing my first drafts by hand, too. There’s usually a complete rewrite in there somewhere, but I don’t always complete the first draft before rewriting it.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Even though my fiction novel isn’t yet published, I do have a story in the works and I do interact with my characters. I talk to them, listen to what they say and sometimes act out a few scenes when I’m by myself.
What advice would you give other writers?
When writing, write from your heart. Don’t be afraid to tell your story. If you get rejected from a publisher, don’t let it hold you back. Don’t get down on yourself for it because it’s not a sign of failure. It’s just a stepping stone to your dream.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I self-published This Lullaby through Amazon Kindle and Createspace because it was flexible for me. It allowed me to decide when to publish. For new authors, my advice for you is to go with the route that feels most comfortable to you.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
The future of book publishing will be amazing. It will continue to grow, especially with Kindle and other self-publishing platforms making it possible for new authors to publish their work without the hassle of finding the right publishing house or hire an agent to do the job for them.
