About Lynda Hilburn:
Lynda Hilburn, author of the Kismet Knight, Vampire Psychologist series, writes paranormal fiction. More specifically, she writes books about vampires, witches, ghosts, psychics and other supernatural creatures. After a childhood filled with invisible friends, sightings of dead relatives and a fascination with the occult, turning to the paranormal was a no-brainer. In her other reality, she makes her living as a licensed psychotherapist, hypnotherapist, professional psychic/tarot reader, university instructor and workshop presenter. Her first novel, “The Vampire Shrink” — which introduced us to Denver Psychologist Kismet Knight and a hidden vampire underworld — was released April, 2012. Book #2, “Blood Therapy,” arrived February, 2013. Book #3, Crimson Psyche, was published in early 2014. Several more books in the series are planned. “Undead in the City,” an erotic paranormal novella, “Diary of a Narcissistic Bloodsucker,” a satire/parody, “Until Death Do Us Part,” a humorous mini-story, “Sex in a Coffin,” and “Devereux: The Night Before Kismet” are now available in e-form from all e-book outlets.
What inspires you to write?
I love to tell stories and to express myself through the written word. Reading all the wonderful vampire/paranormal romance novels — and Anne Rice’s books — several years ago inspired me to try my hand at writing. It has been a great journey so far!
Tell us about your writing process.
I am a seat of the pants writer, although I wish I could plot. I am sure I’d write much faster if I was a plotter instead of a pantser. Sometimes, if I’m really stuck in a book, I’ll force myself to write a short outline and that seems to help me break through the writer’s block. Mostly, I agree with Nora Roberts: it doesn’t matter if I want to write or not. Writing is a job, so I put my butt in the chair. 🙂
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I listen to and talk to my characters. Mostly they run ahead of me and I have to hurry to catch up! I never know where a story is going to go. They connect with me in my dreams as well as in my fantasies.
What advice would you give other writers?
It’s true what most writers say: never give up. What makes a successful author? Persistence. All writers have failures. If we don’t fail, we don’t learn. Keep going!
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I was able to find a publisher for my first novel back in 2006 and learned about traditional publishing through a series of bumpy roads and potholes. When self-publishing became an option, I was very glad, because I really enjoy having control of all aspects of my books. There is no right option for publishing. Traditional, self-publishing or hybrid are all great. It depends on the project. Don’t let anyone tell you there’s one “correct” path.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Things have been changing constantly for the last 10 years — even more than usual. It’s impossible to foretell where things will be one year from now, much less 10 years from now! Stay connected to the writing world and join local and national writing organizations to make sure you can ride the waves as they show up.
