About Lillian and Dave Brummet:
Lillian and her husband Dave are the team behind Brummet Media Group, high-fiving cheerfully as they pass each other on the way from checking off one item or other from their long to-do list. Their business includes Dave’s music studio and percussion accessory products and graphic design work as well as numerous award-winning non-fiction books and popular blogs. Today we help them celebrate their latest book release – From One Small Garden, with over 300 delicious, nutritious recipes!
What inspires you to write?
Lillian: Making a difference is the key, for us. The most recent book (From One Small Garden) honours people who are no longer with us by sharing some of our favourite recipe creations they used to make. These include my grandmother, mother, step-dad, father and parent-in-laws, uncles, aunts… and a number of friends too – many of whom have also passed on. Another of our aims for this book is helping to increase knowledge and enthusiasm by sharing interesting nutritional information, agricultural quirks and historical facts about different foods. We show how to reduce food waste. We show people how easy it is to reduce the need to shop for items encased in packaging, by making it out of ingredients already in their kitchen. We encourage water and energy consciousness in the kitchen, and also promote both gardening and composting. This book will aid frugal-minded, budget-constrained households, while helping to increase the nutritional content of their menu plan.
What authors do you read when you aren’t writing?
Lillian: This is always a difficult question because I admire so very many authors. Stewart Woods, Linda Shuler, David Brin and Nancy Farmer come to mind.
Tell us about your writing process.
Dave: Most times Lillian is responding to interview questions and running the social media end of things while I am working on the back end of things like images, ad creation, copywriting, or editing anything we have written together. We always cross-edit everything for each other. It is amazing what you might miss that some one else’s fresh eyes catches. And with the graphic work I always have a hard-nosed critic with a keen eye just upstairs from me to give an honest second opinion. What looks good to your eye after working on something for hours might be seen as too wordy or the wrong colour scheme. A fresh set of different eyes with a common understanding of the goal is the best feedback you could ask for – and she brings me cookies!
What advice would you give other writers?
Dave: To be in this career long term you have to love what you do, have a reason for the message you are writing, and feel like you are leaving something behind other than a pile of ashes. I think it is important to make your life matter somehow and to pass on the things you learned along the way to others that may be seeking the same knowledge.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Dave: We self-publish on Amazon now, selling most copies in Canada (where we live) and the US. Sometimes the title might be preconceived but usually by the time the manuscript is finished the title has gone through a few changes. It really depends on the market you are aiming to sell to and also what is relevant to the times. Often by the time you finish your book maybe someone else has used a title similar to yours so you might change it based on that.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
Lillian: I believe the future is video and audio as opposed to written hard copy. There are some genres that seem to always have a market – like certain non-fiction, cookbook and youth genres.
