About Leon Kastel:
I write about human action and interaction from a psychological point of view. My themes run the spectrum of human nature, criminal to noble, reasoning to absurd, romantic to erotic. Humans struggle for their meaning in adventure, love, status, sex, money, and power as the ego pulls them from trial to trial creating drama that is always interesting. My stories provide an insightful view of these struggles, sometimes comical. I am a storyteller more than a literary person. I write about the vanities and vices from a sensational viewpoint.
What inspires you to write?
The entertaining lives of people I have known inspire me to write. Some people make their lives more difficult with risk-taking behavior and manipulation of others. My books all have morals to the story, but the morals are not clear cut because most of real life is not clear cut. If I can present a situation and characters that provide an interesting resolution to those morals, I’m happy. I’m even happier when readers tell me they like the story or the story made them laugh.
Tell us about your writing process.
I think about the situations and characters of several different books that I’m writing through the week. I write new ideas down about those situations and characters. Then when I get ready to finish the book I just make sure to incorporate all of my ideas. Sometimes, one idea replaces another, or I decide it’s better to use the idea in a different book.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Only in my mind.
What advice would you give other writers?
Remember that creativity and sales are two different processes. They may enhance one another but they are very different functions.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
Amazon Kindle made it relatively easy to publish my own books.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think it will become more digitized and continue to lose some ground to other media in storytelling.
