About Laurel Ulen Curtis:
Laurel Ulen Curtis is a 28 year old mother of one. She lives with her husband and son (and cat!) in New Jersey, but grew up all over the United States. She graduated from Rutgers University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, and puts that to almost no use other than forecasting for her friends and writing a storm chasing heroine! She has a passion for her family, laughing, and reading and writing Romance novels. She’s also addicted to Coke. The drink, not the drug.
What inspires you to write?
I’m inspired to write by the annoying voices in my head. All it takes is one comment from any unassuming person, and little tiny people start breathing, living, and tapping away at the inside of my brain just begging me to let them out.
Tell us about your writing process.
I’m a pantser. A completely unorganized, unplanning fool. I usually build an entire story around one scene or line of dialogue that pops into my head and builds from there. I tried to be a planner (several times, in fact), but you know what they say about the best laid plans—they often go awry.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
I definitely talk to my characters while I’m writing, and they often talk to me. I’ve been known to call my husband by a character’s name a time or two. Whoops.
What advice would you give other writers?
Be yourself. There are lots of different paths to success out there—just like roads to a destination—and your journey doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
When I self-published my first book, I knew nothing. All I cared about was getting a complete story down and offering it up for the taking. The path to knowledge was longer and less expedient, and sometimes I wish I’d sought it out sooner. Keep learning as you go because it’s an ever-changing career.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think certain genres lend themselves to indie publishing success more than others. No matter what, the digital world continues to grow, and access to books is only getting easier. I can only see that as a good thing.
As for what’s hot, that’s a fluid idea. It will keep changing, and some people will keep chasing it. I’m hoping to get out ahead and cut it off.
